How to get cat urine out of my expensive leather couch?

I have a 2 piece, L-shaped leather couch. I moved into my friends house a few months ago where she has 2 cats, approx age 7-10 for both, and one of them we know has decided to make my couch into her personal urinal. The other cat we’re not sure. I have no pets so no other pet smell would have been on the couch. I think they’re just cranky and old. If anyone has any cat temperament tips, I am open. It’s just weird because a new rooomie is nothing new to them.

Anyway, we called the useless upholstery guy and he basically poured some stuff onto and into the couch (in the crevice where its actual fabric and foam and it smells the worst) and it did nothing. So we took the under side cover off and are cleaning it from the inside out. We bough some pet-smell/urine remover in the economy size and planned on renting some kind of steam cleaner machine to try and get it our ourselves. I need this ready before Dec. 13th when we are hosting an X-mas party and I need something that will work!!

I have access to the whole inside of the couch from underneath so I am able to penetrate the foam cushioning with whatever machine I end up using. And once it’s cleaned it getting covered in plastic asap. Any tips are appreciated, this is SOOOOOOOO frustrating!!!

First, wash it off with lysol or pine sol, then after that dries, wipe it down with "Natures Miracle, Just for Cats" they should sell it at any petco or petsmart. works like a charm

Hope this helps!
Your couch will be better than ever.

have you tried fabreeze pet fresh odor eliminator? that should help at least a little bit.
you just need to scrub it clean and it should go away. i’m so sorry this happened to you.

Because cat urine has such a penetrating and pungent odor, and it becomes amonia as it disintegrates, i would suggest hiring a professional person. You would have to explain the situation, first, and call a peron/company that is reliable. And, unfortunately, not all are reliable.

I had to do the same thing on a couple sponts on my carpet. because once they start,it is so difficult to stop them.

One deterrant I have heard of, but don’t know that it really works is to place a dish of food at the site of their urinatin. the thought is that they will not urinate or defecate where they eat. You could also put water dish there, but I would think that if the water were spilled, it would stain the surface even more.

Soak any smelly areas with Natures Miracle ( from PetSmart ) or Out ! From WalMart, or some other brand of enzyme pet stain remover ,deodorizer. It actually eats the smell and stain, and the couch will be nearly good as new !

I have owned cats for over 16 years and one thing I have learned is that you cannot get the urine smell out of soft items no matter what you try on the stain. The urine is so strong and pungent that it would take years of oxygenation to get rid of the smell. One of my cats peed on my couch once and it took over 7 years for the stuff to evaporate. I tried everything including enzymatic cleaners available all over. No luck. Fabreeze will only mask the smell for 30 min and will make you sick to boot, it is highly irritating to lungs. If you cannot put up with the smell, I recommend buying a new couch. Don’t waste your money on professional cleaning. Once the smell is in the stuffing, ribbing and thread of the couch, nothing will get it out but nature and that takes way too long.
    Good luck.

I have had the same problem, and I don’t envy you your problem. We ended up getting rid of the couch, but were not prepared to go to the lengths you are going to. I hope it works. Febreeze will definitely help. I am answering you because you plan to put plastic on the couch once it is clean. Plastic has a chemical in it which encourages some cats to pee on it – so be prepared. I adore cats, but once they start that behaviour, it is usually but not always, impossible to correct. They will probably start in other areas of the house now. Something has upset them – it could be you, who knows, or maybe a neighbour’s cat spraying outside and they can smell it, or see the cat. You could also get some Feliway (online or pet store) and spray that around – it often helps with inappropriate peeing. Good luck.
