I didn't have that problem with mine, but you might be more sensitive to that type of smell than I am. Also a mattress cover will help and will give it the natural look of the mattress plus save it from any mishaps. Nothing that is waterproof because it will hold heat in and make you sweat (we did it).We have one and love ours.
