You need a solid foundation under any mattress. IKEA sells these wooden slats for like $45 that can be used instead of a box spring. You might try getting something that or some other wooden foundaton. Even a piece of plywood.

You can also buy a memory foam top for your existing mattress for about $100.00. I have that and I love it!

Good luck!
References :
You definitely need a box spring. You may not actually need a new mattress, but it is often much cheaper per piece to buy the spring and mattress together so, if you want the memory foam, get two new pieces. Also it will give you better support if you add a few extra slats. Most beds come with 3 or 4 slats. I had extras cut and use at least 6 per bed.
References :
No, the bed will still be squishy. The box spring gives the support to the mattress. You can try cutting some plywood sheets and laying them in your bedframe. Put your mattress on top. That will give you some support. It won't be the same as a boxspring, but I bet it will help. I have back problems too and before we were able to get a new bed set we did that and it helped.
References :
I have a memory foam mattress and trust me you need a box spring that goes with the mattress. they are very comfortable to sleep. Once you get use to it you'll never be happy with anyother kind of mattress hope you enjoy it like i enjoy mine
