Where can I buy large blocks of carving foam?

February 9, 2010 - 5:56 pm 4 Comments

Something durable, and easy to cut, foam of course. Like to make things out of, where can I find them?

The best way to go is buy a 4×8 sheet of building insulation. I build mountains by stacking layers. If you’re determined you can make a block in nothing flat. Here you go another link in another direction:http://www.culinart.net/styro.html
Please note the price. A sheet of building styrofoam is about $15. Here’s a link:http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=104590-46086-146601&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3006131&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=sim

What kind of dremel bit should I use to cut foam core?

February 2, 2010 - 6:47 pm 1 Comment

I have a variable speed dremel and I am helping a friend with a diorama project. We would like to know if there is a particular bit or cutting wheel we should use to cut clear through foam core.

Honestly, cutting each one carefully with a razor knife is a real pain in the neck.

There is a hot wire cutting tool that works very well. It is built like a coping saw with a nichrome wire as a "blade" The wire is heated by electricity, and is plugged into the wall, so don’t use in any wet or damp areas.
The wire is just hot enough to melt the foam, so you get a clean cut. It should be available at a hobby shop that specializes in model making – especially trains. You can search (internet) for Micromark Tools, who are a US firm specializing in hobby tools and does mail order.
Don’t try to rig something yourself because if the wire is too hot and burns the foam, the chemicals produced may not be predictable and could be dangerous.
For the same reasons carefully follow the instructions for using the tool when you get it.

What kind of foam should I get for drum cases?

January 29, 2010 - 6:16 am 1 Comment

I am buying some cases for my drums soon, and do not want to spend the extra money for the ones with foam in them. The cases I am buying are the Humes and Berg Enduro series. What kind of foam should I get to cut out and put inside them, and where can I buy it?

There is a sort of foam, which i can’t name you because i do not know it’s technical term. But it is made in Europe and the colour is in dark grey. I bought mine from brooklyn. But i’ve seen them on ebay before.

Can a wood router also be used on foam board like foam insulation board?

January 27, 2010 - 1:41 pm 4 Comments

I would like to know if a wood router could be used to cut foam insulation board. I need to make a indent that a router does on wood on foam
the Styrofoam i am using is pink without the balls like a Styrofoam cup. Just solid foam. I am also looking to carve out the middle of the object i am working on about a inch deep. From what i am seeing this is possible.
the whole project is 3 inches thick and like i said before i need to cut into that about an inch

i don’t see why not. i would guess that the higher the density the better result.

Need help on building bench seats. Ive bought the foam and vinyl,?

January 22, 2010 - 11:34 am 1 Comment

I just need to know if i should cut the backing board of the seat to exactly the same size as the foam or should i cut the board like a 1/4 inch under on all sides? or what the best line of attack for this would be.
you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. cutting wood it 900 times easier than cutting 4 inch foam to a desired dimension.

Make your bench seat to the size you want, then you fit the foam to them. You are going about this backwards.

Where can i get foam cubes cut to size near Cheshire?

Hi I am making a children’s decorative toy cube for textiles at school. I need some foam filling but I don’t know where I can get some.

I have tried hobby craft online and can’t find anything and I have looked at the fent shop in Macclesfield on the website. I also tried Dunelm Mill and they only have flat foam blocks.

Please help I want to go and buy some this weekend ideally but i do have more time.

M & S. foam suppliers in Leland may be able to help you. I haven`t got a `phone number but their address is-
Heald House Road
Leyland
PR25 4JA
They are very near the Leyland junction of the M6.
I`ve had pieces of foam from them, and their prices are good.

how should I cut a piece of foam?

January 17, 2010 - 12:54 am 3 Comments

the height is 4". the width and length are 24". I want to cut into an angle. I am not sure how to explain. I don’t want to cut straight. what should I do? thanks
the foam comes from a futon bed.
It looks like a match box now. I want it to look like a semi triangle.

Sharp, I mean really sharp, knife and slice it as though you were slicing a tomato. Watch the wrist.

what shaving foam do you use to have a good shave without cutting yourself and leaving your skin red?

January 13, 2010 - 10:16 am 9 Comments

THE MORE EXPENSIVE THE SHAVING CREAM (I USUALLY SHOP AT MACY’S FOR WHICHEVER S/C IS ON SALE) THE BETTER AND EASIER THE SHAVE WILL BE. WHY? THE MORE EXPENSIVE BRANDS CONTAIN MORE POTENT LUBRICATION SO THAT A RAZOR GLIDES VS. DRAGS OVER THE SKIN. IT ALSO PREVENTS RAZOR BURN 100% OF THE TIME. THE PRICE RANGE I STICK W/ IS BTWEEN 10-15 DOLLARS FOR 1 CONTAINER.
GOOD LUCK.
