Couch back coushion upholstery?

February 24, 2010 - 4:29 pm 1 Comment

I have couch which has removable 2 seats coushions and 2 back coushions.
The seats coushions are different from the back coushions. Each seat coushion is made of a single sheet of good quality foam which is coverd by a fabric with zipper, so its washable.
But the 2 back coushions are made of something like cotton stuffings (not a foam sheet) and the fabric does not have a zipper hence not washable.

Now my problem is even though my couch is in a good condition the back coushions have lost its shape and stiffness leading to back pain.

I’m thinking of replacing the back coushions similar to the seat coushions (foam covered with washable fabric with zip).

I have found the exact fabric in Joann’s. But I dont know how to purchase the foam and stitch the fabric cover with zip. Suggestions required. Should i good to a upholstery? how much would it cost? will they have the foam or is there another shop where we can choose our foam?

Call any seamstress in the phone book. This is a job they do all the time. Ask them what they charge for labor. They will tell you, based on your cushions, what, and how much you need to buy. and, just because the cushions have a zipper, doesn’t mean the covers are washable.

How do I clean cloth seats in a Montana SV6?!?

My van seats have the worst upholstery ever…I hate it! Every water type spot leaves a stain, a sweating cup that drips leaves a spot. I tried some foaming spray from Turtle Wax for carpets and upholstery and it made the seat look worse than when I started! Has anyone actually used something that worked? If so, what was it?! People keep saying what I should "try" but I don’t really want to keep staining my seats while "trying" stuff.
The cloth is not your normal cloth seats, it’s very smooth and not plush and absorbs every water drop and turns it into a stain…is this what you guys have in the cars in your answers? Thanks@

I bought a 99 beetle with cloth seats and the guy had been hauling a cattle dog around in it for 3 years. YUCK. I used Woolite Oxy Deep spot and stain Carpet cleaner as per the directions, and I swear it was amazing. The seats were really clean and free of stains. You couldn’t even see the color of the seats when I started.

where do you go for an entire new car headliner?

i have an older car, it was sitting for a while and the material under the fabric on the headliner is all moldy, i know you can put new fabric on the headliner, but that will just cover up the mold, i want to replace all that foam material. can you do that? how much will it cost? will a upholstery & trim shop do it?

you could do it yourself for $100. It just pulls up really easy, and you push it back in yourself.

Best way to clean the (fabric upholstery) seats in my car?

February 16, 2010 - 10:13 pm 2 Comments

Big problem! I REALLY need to clean the seats of my car, but a detailing place who will steam clean would be very pricey. Things have spilled recently, like milk (yikes!) and tea, and my puppy is an added factor. The car has an odd smell, and the seats have water marks on them. I don’t want to scrub with just an upholstery foam cleaner & brush, I need a deep cleaning. I purchased a hand wet vac, but my question is: What is the best method to clean these seats using a wet vac? What solution or product should I use? How wet should I get the seats before vacuuming the soap & water out of them? Is there something I need to be aware of (such as, is it not a good idea to wet vac the seats in the first place)?
I have all kinds of cleaners (resolve, bissell, etc) that I use on my house carpet due to the puppy. I have two wet vacs (a 9.6v and a 12v), and also some Febreeze for Auto (just to keep it smelling fresh afterwards) I just need some advice on how to do this effectively and get them CLEAN, free of odor and random markings. I’ll be cleaning the floor carpet and floor mats as well, if you have any tips for those.
Please help! I want to do the best job possible and do it correctly, I just need some tips or "do’s" and "do not’s" .
Thanks!!!

where and how to buy big cushions for sofa/couch?

Joanns sells solid foam in various sizes. You can cut it with a serrated bread knife and then glue layers of if together to get the shape and size you need. But you really don’t want the back cushions to be foam ONLY as that will end up being rather uncomfortable — the back cushions need to conform to your back more than foam does. The best combination is to use a core of solid foam about 20 to 30% smaller than the final cushion and then wrap it with several layers of polyester fiber filling (which you can also get at Joanns, back in the upholstery department. After you’ve got it the shape and density you like, make a cover for the stuffing out of muslin so you can slip off the outer cover to clean it.

I’ve made sofa cushions this way several times.

HUMAN OILS IN MY SOFA?

January 31, 2010 - 12:06 pm 1 Comment

I recently inherited a used sofa. the fellow who had the sofa finally got a bed and didn’t need it anymore.( The bed AND the sofa were too much for the smallish bedroom) He had been sleeping on the sofa and one arm(used as pillow) and an upper part where he sat is saturated with some sort of dingy, oily, substance. It is either his natural oils or possibly geri-curl or the like.

We live in HUD apartments and furniture is passed from tenant to tenant. My question is what can I use to remove the stains? Are the foam upholstery cleaners used for auto interiors a good idea? Is there another type cleaner that would be better?

I’ve never tried to clean a velveteen type fabric before and don’t want to ruin the upholstery but the stain is disgusting, and probably not very sanitary. We have the stained portions covered with towels for now, but need a more permanent fix.

Any suggestions would be appreciated….Thanks…JPT

You will need a professional upholstery cleaner to take care of this problem. There are no "off the shelf" cleaners that can remove body oils that have passed through the chairs fabric and are now residing in the padding just beneath the fabric.

I found this out the hard way. I purchased a couch from our local Salvation Army that had geri-curl oils in it. I used a fabric cleaner for auto interiors and that just made matters worse.

I live in Florida and contacted a company named Tru-Clean Carpet and Tile Care and they came over, explained wy off the shelf remedies don’t work (not strong enough) and then cleaned my couch. They charged $95.00 but my couch looks brand new and no more staining.

Hope this helps so you don’t waste your money on products that won’t work.

Crying over spilled milk!?

December 28, 2009 - 6:01 pm 3 Comments

My four year old son spilled chocolate milk in the back seat of my car. I soaked up the milk as soon as it happened (or so I thought), but a few days later my car began to STINK! After trying a carpet cleaner with a scubbie top, thinking it was just on the upholstery with no results, I finally took out the back seat of my car to find that the cushion/foam that the seat is made of is growing mold and covered with dried chocolate milk. Any suggestions to help get rid of the smell?? My car is a lease and I MUST get this taken care of! I did try saturating the seat with Kids N’ Pets cleaner and it is sitting outside drying, but last I checked it still smells… HELP!!

In my opinion I would try a steam cleaner that has an uphoulstry attachment and steam clean the seat, top and bottom including the foam. Cleaner and hot water with a steam cleaner should do the trick by ridding it of the milk and mold, and the heat will kill the odor causing bacteria.

My nephew peed on our (relatively) new couch!?

He spent the night and had an "accident"!!! AAAAARRGHHHHHH!! What should I do? I didn’t want him to be embarrassed so I whisked the 2 cushions away and sprayed the pee spots with foaming pet cleaner for upholstery. I blotted it up but and wondering how else I can clean them. It was in the middle, on both cushions. If I unzip the covers, I will never be able to get them back in correctly. GROSS!! Please help me. :(

You will be able to get the cushions back in correctly.

You can run the cushions through the washer.
You can replace the foam.

What do I do if upholstery company made my couch worse than it was when they took it in for repair?

December 23, 2009 - 8:19 am 1 Comment

. All we wanted was the bottom spring repaired. We never mentioned the seats. when you sat on the couch it appeared as though the spring/springs had come untied. The couch is all leather with great construction. The money I paid for the repair was well worth the cost compared to buying a new leather sofa. The couch was returned without the springs repaired. We were told it only needed the cushions replaced with extra stuffing. Well I had to call the company back out insisting it is the springs. Well this is the third time. The company brings the couch back today. They took out my down feathers padding that laid over the foam cushion. They replaced it with a 5 inch piece of foam. Oh my it is like sitting on a board and now the seats are different from the back sad-ell back cushions

If you didn’t have a detailed contract in writing of exactly what work was to be done there is not much that you can do. It was probably a communications problem. Ask them to fix it. If they are reputable they will try, if not you will call this one experience.

Help!! Stain in car wont go away!! keeps getting larger!!?

December 15, 2009 - 1:11 pm 4 Comments

So i have a 2002 for Taurus i was cleaning before i sell it. i went to Autozone and the guy said use the turtle wax upholstery cleaner. When i came home i started cleaning the seats and there were some small stains on the back seats. When i sprayed the foam on them and brushed it they seemed to get larger. So i tried again….this time they grew a lot more and they were dark brown like coke or coffee. i even tried using my wet vac to suck it up but that made it worse!!! now those tiny stains are the size of almost the whole back seat!!! i don’t know what to do…..i think its over….

Here’s the deal. Whatever stained the seat, most likely coffee, it’s still in side the foam of the seat, so when you soak it, it just wicks up to the surface. To take the stain out try a mix of rubbing alchohol and ammonia (70/30) and put a light amount on a rag, blotting and rubbing the area dry as quickly as possible to prevent wicking. Make sure you have a few clean, dry, and absorbent towels with you that you dont mind getting stain into. If the mix doesn’t work, try straight rubbing (isoprophyl) alchohol.
