My "leather" couch purchased from Lack’s says "polyurethane foam"!!! The tag said LEATHER…Its been less

December 26, 2009 - 1:22 am 3 Comments

than 60 days…Is that real leather or not??? What can I do…

First… reeeeeeeeeeeeeLAX!

Furniture manufacturers have to disclose ALL the materials they put into a piece of furniture, not just the exterior materials.

Your couch’s cushions are made of polyurethane foam… that’s the dense squishy stuff inside the seat and back cushions, and possibly in the arms.

The cushions are, however, covered in LEATHER… and that’s what a LEATHER couch is: leather on the exterior parts and "other stuff" on the inside. Just like velvet drapes would likely have velvet on the front side, and a poly-blend material on the back side.

You most likely got exactly what you ordered/paid for.

Hope this helps,

Which is better sound insulation material, melamine foam or polyurethane foam?

December 23, 2009 - 8:19 am 3 Comments

how they differ? and their advantages and disadvantages with each other? is there any better sound insulation material other than the two mentioned above?

Melamine foam? That’s a neat trick. Are we making cabinets and shelving out of foam now? Sure would make them easier to transport and install!!

Polyurethane foam is a very good sound insulator, because of its closed cell nature. But make sure you are using polyurethane (the pink or blue stuff) and not polystyrene (the white stuff that crumbles easily). In fact, you can seal the joints in the poly sheets with the foam insulation that comes in a can and have a really soundproof environment. However, if you are considering starting up a punk rock band in your garage, please be considerate of your neighbors.

What’s more comfortable: a spring mattress or a foam mattress?

December 10, 2009 - 11:57 am 2 Comments

A mattress and box spring, or a regular(polyurethane) foam mattress with wooden planks under it? I need to figure something out.

Only you should answer this. Go to a mattress store and lie down.

Polyurethane foam manufacture?

By what method is the foam for dashboards made and formed?

The vinyl surface layer is heated and sucked against the surface of the metal mold, this makes the vinyl skin the shape of the finished dashboard.

The mold is then closed, and polyurethane foam is injected in liquid form to fill the rest of the mold cavity, on the back side of the vinyl. This way when the foam hardens, it is behind the vinyl layer, and has a thickness controlled throughout by the space in the mold cavity.

It is a sort of combination of vacuum forming and injection molding.

mattress question. what’s the difference between polyurethane foam and visco memory foam.?

December 3, 2009 - 1:55 am 2 Comments

Visco is a foam that holds the shape: Memory foam is considered medium in firmness and responds to your body’s pressure and temperature. It conforms to the curves of the body, offering support along the spine with no discern-able pressure on bones and joints. Because of this lack of pressure, circulation is encouraged during sleep making it easier and even preferable to sleep in the same position for hours at a time. Our customers have also noted that Memory Foam also reduces the effects of tossing or turning from a sleeping partner!

The Polyurethane foam is incontrovertibly one of the most widely used materials in our modern world. Developed originally during World War II as a replacement for rubber, polyurethane foam uses rapidly grew out of the war applications they were designed for. Whether transformed into roller blade wheels, insulation, elastic fiber, cushion foam or mattress foam, polyurethane foam has single handily revolutionized a number of industries by bringing costs down and increasing durability.

How do you wash/dry the foam seating on children’s vehicle booster seats?

November 23, 2009 - 8:02 pm 2 Comments

I have two.. One is made from polyurethane(sp) foam, the other is made out of that and polyester. The one that is made out of the foam and polyester says to machine wash cold and then "dip dry". What does "dip dry" mean? And should I wash the one that is 100% polyurethane foam the same way(it doesn’t have instructions on it)?
Woops. Haha, I misread it. It says "drip dry".

Drip dry is like hanging on a clothesline or from the shower rod. I would try a carpet cleaner for the polyurethane car seat pad. I know a couple of times I used the car shampooer at the car wash.

Polyurethane foam pillow- – - TOXIC???

November 21, 2009 - 4:09 pm 2 Comments

I just bought a 100% polyurethane foam pillow! I am so excited to use it, it feels so comfy!

Ironically, tonight I saw a news report- this man worked in a mattress factory and shed light on toxicity of chemicals on mattresses–it was like boric acid, for fire retardant.

So, I go get my mail tonight and in Health magazine, there is a huge write up on toxicity in our homes. One item listed is "Your Bed", and it goes to discuss the same findings. I couldn’t really decipher from the article what they were saying about polyurethane, but it doesn’t sound good. I went and checked my new pillow—100% polyurethane foam!!!

It DOES reek of "new smell", and yes, it smells sorta like bugspray! I can’t believe it! Does anyone know about the stuff or have any links where I can find info???

If you are worried about safety, you are far better off with the fire retardant. The long term toxic effects are negligible compared to the risk of a fire starting.
