Is it possible to disconnect the foam from a foam sprinkler system?

January 17, 2010 - 12:55 am 2 Comments

I am looking at a sprinkler system that has a foam aspect to cover a high hazard occupancy. The high hazard has since been removed. I would like to remove the foam and leave the sprinker system as it. Is it as simple as removing the connection? What else needs to be done?

Any help would be appreciated.

The foam system is mixed with water. Depending on the system and how it is set up, you may or may not be able to do so. If you know for sure you are looking at a simple mechanical system then you simply isolate the foam supply.

At the end of the day you had better make sure you aren’t violating any codes. Double check with the fire authority. Often a system like that can not be removed legally without approval,

What is the difference between various spray foam insulation products?

January 13, 2010 - 10:16 am 4 Comments

I have an older home which needs insulation in the attic and under open porch areas.
I’ve heard about the spray foam insulation which is supposed to be more effective than the blown in type. Although the attic has the blown in type already it needs additional insulation. Does anyone have any knowledge about the different types and which would be best for my project? Also, is there somewhere that an individual can rent the equipment? Thank you.

open cell and closed cell

open cell–regular sized bubbles and an r-value of 3.5 per inch

closed cell–small encapsulated bubbles and an r-value of 6-7.25 per inch depending on manufacturer. Tends to be more expensive per R unit. Material is MUCH more dense.

Talk to an insulation’s systems specialist to see which is more economical. Must be licensed to install the stuff. Also look into adding a radiant barrier to improve the attic efficiency.

How can a fountain drink be filled without causing a lot of foam?

When a soda is filled in a foam cup, it foams right away. Is there a way to fill the cup without causing a lot of foam?

tilt the cup until it is on a diagonal, and pour slowly, so that it hits the side of the cup.

What kind of foam is used that is placed with vacuum cleaner filters?

The foam always seems to get dirty before the filter needs to be changed. I always end us gently washing & reusing them. Is there a particular foam I can buy so I can make my own?

It is called open cell foam. The kind that I have seen that is sold in bulk is a larger mesh that is used for air conditioner filters. The vacuum cleaner filters have a finer mesh to catch finer particles.

How do I remove the leftover pieces of foam on my hardwood floor after i ripped up my carpet?

December 26, 2009 - 1:22 am 5 Comments

I just ripped up my carpet and the foam underneath, but the foam in stuck to the floor in some places, how do i get rid of it?
I have already tried a flat scraper and a hot, wet sponge and neither worked. Help!

If you are going to refinish the wood floor.

Try using a wet/dry sandpaper. Just make sure you have removed the staples holding the padding in place.

How to remove carpet underpad/foam stuck on concrete floor?

December 23, 2009 - 8:19 am 4 Comments

Recently moved into new house and putting new carpet in basement. When lifting old carpet, the underpadding/foam is stuck to the cement sub floor. The carpet lifts off, leaving pretty much 100% of the foam stuck behind. Any idea’s on way to fix this to make the foam lift off/easier to remove.

i would rent a floor scraper. you can rent one for about $20, or you can buy one for about twice the renting price. it’s basically a long handle with a razor blade at the end of it. it’s most commonly used with scraping linoleum off of concrete floors, but it should do the job.

you could, also, get a hand scraper or even a drywall taping knife, which costs about $5. the only problem with that is that you will be on your hand and knees…and it will take a long time! good luck

How can I clean a foam backed rug?

December 15, 2009 - 1:11 pm 1 Comment

I recently purchased one of those foam kitchen rugs and don’t know how to wash it.

If it’s the same kind I’m thinking of, you can wash it in your washing machine – maybe at a slower (gentle) speed – in cold water, and then let it air dry.

How do I get a small piece of foam out of an ear canal?

December 10, 2009 - 11:57 am 7 Comments

I have a friend that wears a hearing aid. A 1/4 inch piece of foam broke off and is stuck in the friend’s ear canal. The friend has tried washing out the foam pad with olive oil, mineral oil, and of course soap and water. The friend will see a doctor on Monday. Any suggestions in the mean time? I am scared to use tweezers.Thanks.

DO NOT try to get it out. I know it might be uncomfortable, but leave it in there and let the doctor get it out. Don’t go poking around in there, you could damage the ear drum and cause permanent damage.

How can I refresh the foam inside my couch cushions?

December 8, 2009 - 2:42 am 2 Comments

We’ve had the couch for less than a year, and I am able to take the covers off & wash those, but I would like to clean or at least completely refresh the foam inside. I’ve been using Renuzit (like Febreze), but would like to do something that doesn’t have such a perfume-y smell…. Ideas?

Put them outside on a bright sunny and windy day.It will also somewhat pouf them up.
