What type of foam rubber for sleeping?

February 28, 2010 - 7:15 pm 1 Comment

I need to replace my motorhome bench seat cushion foam rubber with something more solid for sleeping, some firm foam rubber. Anyone know one foam rubber from another and what company will custom cut them.

The Army Surplus Store always had large pieces of foam rubber of various densities and firmness.

The memory foam mattress we got used on Craigslist from a military couple moving over seas. It was very reasonable price but a little firm for me. A little Lysol Spray Disinfectant and it was as good as new.

Our old camper had some cheesy weak foam rubber in it too like you sank directly to the wood beneath and had no comfort.

How can I hide expanding foam from the bottom of my airing cupboard?

I decided to use this to fill a massive gap at the bottom of my airing cupboard and it looks a mess, though it did the job! How can I make it look more presentable and less like a foam machine?

You can cut of any excess easily with a long sharp craft blade.

Couch back coushion upholstery?

February 24, 2010 - 4:29 pm 1 Comment

I have couch which has removable 2 seats coushions and 2 back coushions.
The seats coushions are different from the back coushions. Each seat coushion is made of a single sheet of good quality foam which is coverd by a fabric with zipper, so its washable.
But the 2 back coushions are made of something like cotton stuffings (not a foam sheet) and the fabric does not have a zipper hence not washable.

Now my problem is even though my couch is in a good condition the back coushions have lost its shape and stiffness leading to back pain.

I’m thinking of replacing the back coushions similar to the seat coushions (foam covered with washable fabric with zip).

I have found the exact fabric in Joann’s. But I dont know how to purchase the foam and stitch the fabric cover with zip. Suggestions required. Should i good to a upholstery? how much would it cost? will they have the foam or is there another shop where we can choose our foam?

Call any seamstress in the phone book. This is a job they do all the time. Ask them what they charge for labor. They will tell you, based on your cushions, what, and how much you need to buy. and, just because the cushions have a zipper, doesn’t mean the covers are washable.

How do i get rid of Foam in my aquarium?

February 22, 2010 - 5:19 pm 3 Comments

Well i have a 31L tank and it has recently started to foam up. I have had this tank for well over 3 months now and it is home to 20 guppy frys. I don’t think i over feed them as they eat all i put in 1 minute or two and i don’t use a dechlorinater or put any chemicals in the water. I have done a 50% water change every day to see if i could solve this problem for a week now but there is no change. Please help.
and yes i do have a filter
i use R.O water brought from a shop and that has all the chlorine taken out. And all the tests have come back 0 for ammonia and so on.

You must find out what is the cause of the foaming first. Foam usually means you have an ammonia spike, and if you’re not using dechloraminator that’s probably why.

You really must use a dechloraminator if your community uses chloramines rather than chlorine. It doesn’t evaporate out from just sitting like chlorinated water does. Chloramine is basically chlorine with ammonia added to prevent the chlorine from evaporating out.

If you are doing a 50% water change every day with water that has not been treated you are putting chlorine into your tank.

What kind of filter are you using? Take a sample of your water to the pet store for testing if you don’t have your own test kit and find out what’s off- it will probably be a high ammonia level. (Anything higher than 0 is dangerously high and potentially fatal.)

You’re changing the water way too often… water changes should only be 20%.

How do I clean cloth seats in a Montana SV6?!?

February 22, 2010 - 5:18 pm 2 Comments

My van seats have the worst upholstery ever…I hate it! Every water type spot leaves a stain, a sweating cup that drips leaves a spot. I tried some foaming spray from Turtle Wax for carpets and upholstery and it made the seat look worse than when I started! Has anyone actually used something that worked? If so, what was it?! People keep saying what I should "try" but I don’t really want to keep staining my seats while "trying" stuff.
The cloth is not your normal cloth seats, it’s very smooth and not plush and absorbs every water drop and turns it into a stain…is this what you guys have in the cars in your answers? Thanks@

I bought a 99 beetle with cloth seats and the guy had been hauling a cattle dog around in it for 3 years. YUCK. I used Woolite Oxy Deep spot and stain Carpet cleaner as per the directions, and I swear it was amazing. The seats were really clean and free of stains. You couldn’t even see the color of the seats when I started.

Expending foam: Open & close cell foam?

February 20, 2010 - 4:42 pm 2 Comments

I have two options: buying close cell, fire resistant, R-7 per inch, 3 lb density foam for $12 per cubic ft. OR buying open cell, fire resistant, R-3.7 per inch, 0.75 density foam for $6.80 per cubic ft.

SO, I would like your educated opinion on what should I buy. Thank you.

P.S. I’m using foam with combination with fiberglass, just what to seal all small gaps to air proof. I do understand difference between open and closed cell/

If you want to "seal all small gaps to air proof" then closed-cell is the only option. Open-cell foam is still permeable, so it will not seal as well as closed-cell.

Im Planning to startup a poly foam Packaging unit, Please suggesta good name for my company.?

What is the difference between Memory Foam and Italian Visco?

February 18, 2010 - 7:19 pm 2 Comments

During mattress and pillow shopping, we couldn’t get a straight answer from the salespeople. What is the difference between memory foam mattress/pillow and Italian visco? Thanks.
I see where the website www.myfoammattresses.com talks about memory foam and visco, but I don’t see any delineation as to what the difference is between the two. Is one just name brand, and the other generic? Thanks.
sorry, www.myfoammattress.net is the correct website.

Memory foam and visco elastic foam are different names for the same product.

where do you go for an entire new car headliner?

February 18, 2010 - 7:19 pm 1 Comment

i have an older car, it was sitting for a while and the material under the fabric on the headliner is all moldy, i know you can put new fabric on the headliner, but that will just cover up the mold, i want to replace all that foam material. can you do that? how much will it cost? will a upholstery & trim shop do it?

you could do it yourself for $100. It just pulls up really easy, and you push it back in yourself.

Closed cell foam is air tight. Imagine thousands of little balls (each sealed with air inside) compressed together. Open cell foam is more porous. More like a sponge. I personally prefer closed cell foam.
