Where is a good place to buy foam for cushions?

October 30, 2009 - 8:41 am 3 Comments

I need a resilient and durable foam that will withstand heavy use. Something similar to the foam inside a couch cushion.

Wal Mart carries foam, just not sofa size.
Other than that look in your phone book under FOAM.
Call for prices.
Also call a few mattress places and buy a couple twin size foam mattresses and cut them to size with an electric knife.
Works great.

Memory / Keepsake Box Padding?

October 30, 2009 - 8:41 am 7 Comments

I want to make a personalised keepsake / memory box for my little sister’s christening. I have a great box I can use but I’d like to make it so it is slightly padded on at least the top. Would upholstery foam work for this, or is there something better I could use?

Also, how would I glue the product onto the box? It is a wooden box, if that helps. Also, how would I secure the fabric over it in a way that would be safe and permanent?

Please, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated as I’ve never done this specific thing before so I want to make sure I don’t waste any time and money and potentially mess up!

Thank you!

Use a couple layers of poly batting (you can get it at most fabric stores) to pad the box. The polyester batting works wonderfully and when applying the fabric over it, you can pull extrememly tight so that you lose all wrinkles in the fabric and once you tack the fabric – I would use staples – the batting poofs back nice and plump –

To finish, use a coordinating felt cut just shy the inside of the size box. Glue over the entire underside (where staples were placed) with tacky glue – On the top, you could use small pearled beads and sew them on to decorate the box and make a more 3d look to it (if attaching and sewing on beads, do this prior to attaching to the box)

Cutting memory foam topper for my bed?

October 30, 2009 - 8:41 am 1 Comment

It is a king size memory foam pad…very thick and heavy. My bed is a queen so I need to cut it down but I’m not sure what to use. Would clean scissors be ok?
Does anyone know of any links to find out more?
Thanks!!

I had to cut mine down as well. Scissors work, but if it’s too thick they might leave a jagged edge. Mine was pretty thick so I used a cooking knife. I think it was a bread knife. All I know is that it was long enough to slice through it all at once. Because it was long enough it left a smooth edge. Good luck :-)

foot positon question help!!!!!?

October 30, 2009 - 8:41 am 3 Comments

hey i was just wanting to know why do my feet roll to the outside of my stirrup. i was wanting to know because my foot starts to hurt really bad after about 3 or 4 hours of riding. I do endurance and i need to know how to fix it and or why it happens. oh i don’t know if this matters but just in case it dose i use endurance stirrups with the closed cell foam and the stirrup is 5" wide and 4" deep i also ride with long stirrups but i have proper riding boots. well if you have any ideas to help me please responds thanks.
oh i mostly grip with my legs

do you grip with your legs or your seat?

Then try gripping with your legs less and more with your seat… more thigh work really. I used to have the same problem… my trainer for some reason made me turn my feet out as much as I can and told me to only grip with my calves so that she can see light through my knees, then I took lessons from a dressage trainer and she told me opposite.. she said grip with your seat, and touch the knee rolls just enough to where I cant see any light. And she just basically forced me to turn my toes in, she also gave me a tip, put some of your weight on the outside of your foot, but do a little bit by a little bit, going from toes out to toes in works muscles you didnt know about, I should know, I went through it haha

Tempurpedic Sleepnumber or best of both?

Would like to hear honest reviews from what you have and what you have tried, which is better? what are the drawbacks? is it worth the money?

Also i came across this novaform version at costco that seems like the best of both worlds:
dual select air chambers and 3" of premium high density foam on top (they dont say the exact density however i.e. 4lb/5lb/6lbs) http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11235681&search=novaform&Mo=30&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&N=5000043%204018498&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&cat=62415&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=novaform&Ntk=Text_Search&Ntt=novaform&No=6&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&s=1&Sp=S&topnav=&Nty=1&s=1

any thoughs?
also i found this site
which again is the best of both worlds idea however no mention of price so i assume it’s expensive.

The wife and I purchased an entry-level Tempurpedic mattress, and the recommended $145.00 pad a year ago. We both hated it. After two weeks our backs were hurting, we would get too hot on it, and neither of us could find just the right setting number. And if you try to add air during the night, the pump/compressor wakes your mate.
We were more than happy to spend the $100 to ship it back.

The only good to come from the purchase was the pad, (that was not returnable). It made our old mattress feel like new.

If you are going to get one, opt for the high-end model, that comes with alot of foam.

Good Luck

You know – the foam pieces, bubble wrap, "quavers" etc. that companies insist on using to send you things in the post?

I use them to help fill landfills.

How do I liquid foam insulate a pressurized wall that’s already been put up? Can I drill holes and inject?

October 28, 2009 - 3:08 am 2 Comments

I have a 15 foot wall that was recently put up (pressurized/temp wall) and unfortunately there was no insulation put in the wall. I’m trying now to rectify the situation with some liquid foam insulation or another method. How would I do this? Thanks.

If you inject the liquid foam into the wall, stand away from it because you will blow the whole wall out. Then you can clean up the mess and rebuild the wall putting insulation in it this time.

There is a light weight particle insulation that can be poured into the wall through a few holes near the top, then patch the holes. See your local building supplies store.
